One difference between the role of the writer and the academic is that the academic focuses more on combining ideas from other sources than finding his or her own voice. Usually, the writer tends to be more self-absorbed, but in a constructive way because his or her own ideas are portrayed and the reader can hear his or her voice. The idea of the writer being self-centered about expressing his or her own thoughts sometimes gets lost in translation when the reader tries to interpret different messaging than the writer sought.
